Be-One, also known as XPAND, is a five-storey office building located in Puurs. The project combines a strong environmental ambition with a timber structural concept, aiming to reduce
the building’s carbon footprint while creating a flexible and pleasant working environment.
Designed as a continuous loop, the building connects its five office plates through a gentle ramp that unfolds around a large central atrium.
The building is conceived as a continuous loop. Every 10 m, the floor level rises slightly, so that the five office plates form a gentle ramp that unfolds around the large central atrium, over a total height of 30 m. The atrium roof, made of ETFE, is supported by glulam arches with a 20 m span.
These office plates are designed entirely in timber and rest on an open ground floor that hosts the car park. The floors are made of 16 cm CLT panels continuous over three supports. The four circulation cores, which also brace the building, are likewise made of CLT. Inside, columns, beams, floor soffits and core walls are left exposed, highlighting the natural expression of the material.
The main beams supporting each office floor are paired at the columns. This configuration ensures the continuity of the beams, allowing the ramp to extend as a cantilever towards the atrium while absorbing the gradual level variations between plates. The space left between the two paired beams is also used to route the MEP services.
The project was developed with the explicit goal of minimising the use of concrete. The building rests on screw piles, which also contribute to resisting horizontal wind loads. This strategy avoided pouring a concrete slab over the entire footprint of the building.
The facade itself is built as a timber frame structure, extended by a treated-timber canopy that follows the continuous slope of the floors. This canopy provides solar shading for the openings while supporting the photovoltaic panels. WOW also carried out the execution design of this element.
