To accommodate its koalas, Pairi Daiza animal park developed a new enclosure comprising two technical buildings, a glazed covered area and a visitor walkway.
The two technical buildings are constructed using timber-frame systems. The visitor walkway features a post-and-beam structure whose architectural expression draws inspiration from the koalas’ Australian origins.
The enclosure is covered by a hybrid timber-steel-glass canopy designed to evoke the form of trees. Rough-sawn oak columns form the trunks, weathering steel elements represent the branches, and screen-printed glass suggests the foliage.
