Context

Construction of the new primary school “Emile Bockstael” in the region of Heyzel in Brussels. The school is a passive building of two floors over a ground floor, and covers a ground surface of about 1200m². The structure is made of timber and rests on foundations made of concrete. The class and activity rooms are distributed around a central glazed atrium that is open-air.

Particularities

In order to achieve the passive energy standard the project includes a geothermal network as well as an earth cooling tube network burried under the bottom slab. The building is entirely constructed out of visible timber : the floors and walls are made of cross-laminated timber panels and the beams are in glulam or massive timber. The top floor is covered by a green roof which also includes photovoltaic panels. Due to a soil having low geomechanical properties and to avoid thermal bridges, a second underground concrete slab was created under the networks, resting on piles so as to prevent excessive settlements.
