The project reimagines the existing industrial site VDS in Saint-Gilles into a mixed-use development combining 20 housing units and a social reuse center. Rather than starting from scratch, the architectural approach builds on the qualities of the existing structure, creating a coherent and permeable urban ensemble anchored by a central garden. The design emphasizes spatial quality, natural light, and a fine balance between density and openness, supporting a diversity of uses and social interactions.
The project adopts a radical low-carbon and circular approach by retaining 70% of the existing structure, thus avoiding major demolition and excavation. This choice significantly reduces CO₂ emissions and material use. To support the new timber volumes, an 8-meter structural grid was developed, minimizing the number of load-bearing points that need to pierce through the existing slabs and reach new foundations. The use of ribbed CLT floors combined with glulam beams optimizes long-span performance while maintaining a lightweight system.
