The project consists of the construction of a primary school located across from the town hall of Saint-Martin-sur-Ouanne.
It adopts the principle of distributing the educational program across two single-storey buildings whose scale matches that of the town hall, in order to integrate harmoniously into the surrounding rural context.
One building houses the classrooms and educational spaces (motor skills room, nap room, administration, etc.), while the other contains the daycare area, the dining hall, and the food service area. The two buildings are connected by an outdoor metal-framed canopy. Both volumes are oriented toward a central green space — the playground. This recreational area also includes a vegetable garden, fostering educational activities and providing shade for the children. A large space, initially designed for student gatherings, serves as a transition between the classrooms and the motor skills room. Thanks to its wide glazed partitions, it can function as a temperate bioclimatic hall in winter or as an open canopy in summer. Versatile by design, this space can host exhibitions or transform into an ideal setting for outdoor educational activities, such as an “outdoor classroom.”
The interior load-bearing walls are made of exposed terracotta brick, while the peripheral walls are topped with timber-frame extensions. The entire roof structure is built in wood, showcasing four distinct types of visible truss systems.
A cantilevered system of rafters with variable dimensions forms a continuous canopy around the building, providing solar shading and contributing to the project’s bioclimatic performance.
